Coronavirus and MS

Coronavirus (COVID-19)

We understand that there may be confusion or concern especially for those who already have an underlying health condition such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

What does Coronavirus mean for those with MS?

The MS International Federation has said that as this strain of the coronavirus is new, we still need to learn more about how it may affect people with MS.

Many disease modifying therapies (DMTs) for MS work by suppressing or modifying the immune system. We know that people with MS who are receiving these therapies can face an increased risk of complications related to viral infections.

Please do not make any changes to your medication before checking with your specialist MS team or relevant healthcare professional.

If you are taking a DMT and are either exposed to COVID-19 or are confirmed to have the COVID-19 infection, please contact your neurologist or other medical professional.

This is the current advise from the NHS on Coronavirus:

How to Avoid Coronavirus (COVID-19)

  • wash your hands with soap and water often – do this for at least 20 seconds
  • always wash your hands when you get home or into work
  • use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available
  • cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze
  • put used tissues in the bin straight away and wash your hands afterward
  • try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell
  • avoid touching touch your eyes, nose or mouth especially if your hands are not clean

Symptoms of Coronavirus

The symptoms of coronavirus are:

  • a cough
  • a high temperature
  • shortness of breath

These symptoms do not necessarily mean you have the illness and are more likely to be from much more common illnesses such as cold and flu.
