spasticity

Spasticity refers to muscle stiffness or tightness, which can affect normal movement. In MS, this is generally in leg muscles, but sometimes affects other joints. To some extent spasticity may help overcome muscle weakness, which can be beneficial.

When spasticity is troublesome there are several drugs and other treatment options that may help. A physiotherapist can assess the level and type of spasticity, and recommend suitable exercises and other treatments.

Severe muscle stiffness may need more intensive treatment. Occasionally Botox may be used to allow the muscles to relax.
