Our trustees play a vital role in making sure that MS Research Treatment & Education (MSRTE) achieves its core purpose. They oversee the overall management and administration of the charity. They also ensure that MSRTE has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision. Just as importantly, they support and challenge the team to enable MSRTE to grow and thrive, and through this, achieve our mission to further our understanding of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and develop better treatments through high quality research and education.
Board members have a collective responsibility. This means that trustees always act as a group and not as individuals.
As well as fulfilling the duties of a Trustee, the HR Advisor maintains an overview of MSRTE’s staff and trustee affairs. The HR Advisor ensures that effective and appropriate HR measures, controls and procedures are put in place and reports to the Board at regular intervals about the staff and trustee support and development within the organisation.
HR Trustee Role
- Committed to ensuring highest standards of governance in policies and practice related to employee relations, recruitment, retention, reward and recognition.
- To promote staff and trustee development.
- Assessing risks and measuring the impact of HR interventions in the light of changing legal requirements and best practice and to advise the board on implementing required new developments in response to legal developments and changes.
- Implementing and reviewing company policies and practices in the context of furthering charitable objectives and evaluating how they impact beneficiaries and staff.
- Ensuring long-term strategic oversight of the organisation’s personnel and staffing requirements in relation to the overarching goals of the charity.
- To review and recommend current and future strategic resourcing, training and development plans to the trustee board.
- To actively contribute to HR policy setting, strategic direction, goal and target setting, and support senior staff in evaluating staff performance against defined targets, budgets, and charitable objectives.
- To ensure that HR activities and interventions are linked to the company’s charitable objectives and complement the company culture.
- To ensure the Trustee Board monitors and reviews the role and performance of all staff, rewards performance accordingly and identifies appropriate development opportunities.
- To collaborate with the Director for Finance to monitor the financial position of the charity and its operations within its means and objects, making sure that there are clear lines of accountability for day-to-day financial and organisational management.
- To monitor whether the service complies with its governing document and standards and if the needs of the beneficiaries are being met.
In addition to the above, the HR Advisor will also have the responsibilities and qualities of all trustees:
- Support and provide advice on MSRTE’s purpose, vision, goals and activities.
- Approve operational strategies and policies and monitor and evaluate their implementation.
- Oversee MSRTE’s financial plans and budgets and monitor and evaluate progress.
- Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.
- Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored and controlled effectively.
- Review and approve MSRTE’s financial statements.
- Provide support and challenge to MSRTE’s staff team in the exercise of their delegated authority and affairs.
- Keep abreast of changes in MSRTE’s operating environment.
- Contribute to regular reviews of MSRTE’s own governance. Attend Board meetings, adequately prepared to contribute to discussions.
- Use independent judgment, acting legally and in good faith to promote and protect MSRTE’s interests, to the exclusion of their own personal and/or any third-party interests.
- Contribute to the broader promotion of MSRTE’s objects, aims and reputation by applying your skills, expertise, knowledge and contacts.
As a small charity, there will be times when the trustees will need to be actively involved beyond Board meetings. This may involve scrutinising board papers, leading discussions, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, presenting externally, or other issues in which the trustee has special expertise.
We are looking for people willing to bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role, and who will broaden the diversity of thinking on our board.
Previous governance experience would be beneficial but not essential – we will provide a full induction and training.

Terms of appointment
Terms of Office
Trustees are appointed for a 3-year term of office, renewal for 2 further terms to a maximum of 9 years.
- This is a voluntary position, but reasonable expenses are reimbursed.
- Attending at least four Board meetings annually. Currently meetings are held remotely
- Attending annual strategy and training days where necessary
Ad hoc and occasional support through working groups and/or support to the team.
