MS fatigue is one of the most difficult symptoms to deal with. There is no effective treatment for fatigue although some drugs may help. Very little is understood about the origins of fatigue in MS. FACETs (Fatigue: Applying Cognitive behavioural and Energy Effectiveness Techniques to life Style) is a group based therapy programme initially designed by members of the psychology research and clinical teams at Poole Hospital in Dorset and the University of Bournemouth. In Bristol, research to determine whether or not this group therapy approach was helpful for MS-related fatigue was carried out in collaboration with Bournemouth and Southampton Universities working closely with the MS Research team and funded by the MS Society in 2009.
Trained staff are currently running FACETs groups at The Vassall Centre in Bristol and we will continue to support training for other professionals who wish to develop FACETs therapy clinics. This course has been amazing. It's an awesome thing to do to provide a point of contact and connection for people with MS, the perspectivee gained from shared experience is excellent. It would be, I think, hugely beneficial to newly diagnosed pateints given the misunderstanding and ambiguity around fatigue. Thank you so much for this, it's genuinely changed my life. - A FACETs MS Research participant.
